Q&A with Ryan Coscia of Solar Powered People
Although Modesto-based band Solar Powered People are fast at work on a new album and gearing up for a European tour in the Fall, the Three Ring band is still riding high from the success of last summer's album "Living Through The Low". While the lingering beauty of the record's many catchy melodies caught the ears of listeners, the album's cover also caught the eye of lots of art lovers. We caught up with SPP drummer, Ryan Coscia who created the albums sleeve.
Q: What came first, the album or the art?
A: I drew it one night with the help of a half bottle of wine. I just wanted to make something pretty for my wife. We hung it up on the wall and then one day our singer, Tony Pennington saw it and said he wanted to use it for the album's cover. Funny thing is that other bands had already asked to use the image too. My wife said she was cool with Solar Powered People using it.
Q: How long did it take to make?
A: Probably about ten minutes. It was so simple. Its funny how you can work on something for days and it doesnt turn out the way you want. And then in just like ten minutes you come up with a happy accident like this.
Q: What materials did you use?
A: Just a piece of plywood that I threw white house paint on and then started drawing on it with ink. Canvasses are too expensive, so I like to use recycled lumber.
Q: That sounds very Modesto!
A: Yeah. Our guitar player wanted to get it tattooed. But I thought that might be kind of weird, because I still think of it as the art I made for my wife. I said, Dude, I dont really want to see my wife's art on you!
Ryan Coscia is the drummer for Solar Powered People and has also played with The Lonelyhearts and Seventeen Evergreen. He has designed record artwork for Kid Mud and Great Northern, among other bands. Further samples of his artwork can be viewed at www.boyroo.net.
