Parasol Homepage |

San Francisco based Rykarda Parasol (\reh-kaer-dah\)
plays "rock noir" that evokes moody atmospheres and gin-drenched
romanticism. Aptly describing the sound as underhanded and white-collar
criminal, the music draws comparisons to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds,
Nico and the Velvet Underground, Black Heart Procession, and Johnny
Cash. These cinematic songs tell stories of bad deeds and betrayed
loves with stark simplicity.
The daughter of a Holocaust survivor and Swedish mom, Rykarda
Parasol (her real name), began writing and performing after returning
to her native San Francisco following some years living in both
Los Angeles and Texas. Her experiences became the inspiration
for poignant songs about isolation, detachment, and death. Those
true accounts have a dominant space on the album “Our Hearts
First Meet”.
Reviews for Our Hearts
First Meet:
"It maintains a noir feel, that sort of dark atmosphere,
but there are some songs that sound like Swans and there are some
songs that sound like Mazzy Star and there are some songs that
sound like Iggy Pop... This is probably going into my top ten
albums of 2006." - Keef's Blog-O-Rama
"With brooding dark undertones and a sultry, wanton swagger,
I wouldn’t turn my back if I were you."
- DJ Pusspuss, SF Bay Times
"Parasol has a wounded yet powerfully sensual and highly
mysterious voice. She sounds like a character in a film-noir picture,
one that would leave lipstick on a matchbook, walking away in
street fog as unsolved deaths mount in the city. There is something
about a voice this ominous that is irresistibly attractive."
- Kyrby Raine, Ink 19
"Though it seems like the headliner of this night would
be best heard at the stroke of midnight, Rykarda Parasol took
the stage an hour earlier, for this is how Thursday nights go.
In this final round, the style was dark Americana, or, if you
will, spooky country. Her band supported her well in both image
and sound, providing a perfect frame for Parasol's Southern Gothic
portraits of night trains and vengeful belles." - Live Review,
Performer Magazine
"A genuine musical force in her own right with a Harvey-laced
smokiness to her voice, Parasol weaves gothic, bluesy tales of
desire and strength, compassion and solitude. She's just what
I need." - Eliana Fiore, SF Bay Guardian
"In the lazy, hazy tradition of fellow salvation shucksters
Nick Cave and Siouxie Sioux, singer Rykarda Parasol leads this
fourpiece from Frisco, delivering a smoky, gin-tinged salve to
soothe the souls of the wicked, like Opal, OP8, and opium combined."
